Our story

A Danville family business since 1997.

Auctions have run in the Burke family for generations, and Steve grew up around them. In 1997 he and Cindy struck out on their own with B&H Auction. Nearly three decades later they’re still at it: household goods and antiques, and now and then a car, a house or a whole business.

“At the end of the day, we sold everything.”

  1. Roots

    An auction family

Steve’s father, Roger Burke, was a well-known Danville antiques dealer and auctioneer, and he’s listed as an auctioneer on B&H’s early website too.

  2. Training

    Schooled to call a sale

Steve trained at the Mendenhall School of Auctioneering in High Point, North Carolina.

  3. 1997

    B&H opens

Steve and Cindy open B&H Auction on Highway 29 North. Cindy grew up in Akron, Ohio, in a family of collectors. Her own favorite is Cambridge Rose Point glass.

  4. 2003

    Sunday sales in the gallery

Sales start at 1 p.m. on scheduled Sundays in a 6,000-square-foot, climate-controlled gallery: more than 1,000 lots a sale, open to the public, with free load-out help.

  5. 2013

Thursday nights and the open road

Thursday night auctions at home, on-site estate and real estate sales, and auctions as far off as Northern Virginia and Madison, Georgia.

  6. 2020

    Online, and a store

When Covid hit, the auctions moved online. That summer, Steve and Cindy opened B&H Market on the Dan in an old lumber yard on Commerce Street.

  7. Today

    Nearly three decades in

Most sales run online on HiBid, with the occasional live auction. Chris Lynch helps Steve and Cindy run the Market.

How buying works

Your first find
starts here.

New to online auctions? Browsing is free. Here’s how a B&H sale works, from the terms in B&H’s current HiBid catalogs.

1

Browse the catalog

Open a B&H sale on HiBid. Every lot has photos, a description and measurements where they matter.

2

Register on HiBid

Create a free HiBid account, register for the sale and accept its terms. B&H requires a card on file to bid.

3

Place your bids

Bid lot by lot, or enter a maximum and HiBid bids for you in steps: $5 up to $95, $10 up to $500, then $25.

4

Pay your invoice

After the sale, your invoice arrives by email with pickup instructions. Pay in full before pickup, and check your spam folder.

5

Pick it up

Pickup is one day, by appointment. Bring your own boxes, packing material and help for loading.

18% buyer’s premium

Added to every winning bid, plus Virginia sales tax unless you have a resale certificate on file.

Ways to pay

Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, cash within 24 hours of the close, certified funds, wire, or approved check.

Pickup, not preview

Current sales have no preview, so the photos are the preview. Anything left after pickup day is considered abandoned.

As is, all sales final

Read each description closely. Questions about a lot? Call (434) 836-4636 before it closes.

Sell with B&H

A single piece.
A whole estate.
A good place to start.

Moving, downsizing and settling a loved one’s estate are hard enough. B&H can sell a few selected pieces or the entire estate. In many cases, the family simply picks out what to keep, and B&H takes care of the rest.

Estate auctions

Selected items or a whole household, cataloged, photographed and put in front of local and national buyers.

Consignments

B&H is always interested in quality consignments for upcoming sales.

Real estate and vehicles

The occasional house or automobile, like the absolute home auctions B&H held in Danville in 2019 and 2020.

Business liquidations

Shop inventory, designer and market samples, even a funeral home, hearse and all.

“There are no fees to the estate owner. Everything is covered within the commission of the sale.”
Cindy Burke, in Hyco Lake Magazine, June 2025

How a sale comes together

Every estate is different. This is the usual path.

Step 1

Talk it through

Call (434) 836-4636 or email with what you have. Photos help.

Step 2

Agree on terms

The commission is agreed on before the auction. Nothing is billed to the estate owner.

Step 3

Catalog and sell

B&H catalogs and photographs everything and runs the sale, most often online on HiBid.

Step 4

Settle up

You get a detailed spreadsheet breaking down the sale, which helps when there are several heirs.

Steve and Cindy opened B&H Market on the Dan in the summer of 2020, in an old lumber yard on Commerce Street. You walk in through the silo, past a Montana-town storefront the last owners built, into room after room of finds.

Inside are dealer booths and local consignments: High Point market samples, vintage and formerly loved furniture, estate pieces, lamps, rugs, glassware, art, jewelry and garden furniture.

A few helpful answers

Good questions.

Still have one?
We’re a phone call away.

(434) 836-4636
Where do I place my bids?

On B&H’s HiBid site, bhantiqueauctions.hibid.com. Choose “View catalog” for an auction, sign in or create a free account, and register for that sale. B&H requires a valid credit card to secure online bidding.

Can I see items before bidding?

Not for current sales. The catalogs list “no preview,” because many sales come straight from private homes. Every lot is photographed and described, and everything sells as is, where is, so look closely and call (434) 836-4636 with questions before bidding closes.

How does the closing work?

Bidding “begins to close” at the time on the catalog, then lots close one after another, 5 seconds apart, in lot order. Each lot has a 2-minute soft close: a bid in its final 2 minutes gives that lot 2 more minutes, so everyone gets a fair last word.

How does pickup work?

Each sale has one pickup day, by appointment. For the current sales it’s a Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. at the home, and winners get the address. Pay in full first, bring boxes, packing material and help for loading. If you can’t make the pickup day, please don’t bid: unclaimed items are considered abandoned. Schedule your pickup time online.

Is shipping available?

Small items can ship. Call (434) 836-4636 or email help@bandhauction.com after the sale. Handling starts at $15 and depends on size and quantity, and shipping can take 8 to 10 weeks. If you live within 60 miles of the gallery, B&H asks that you pick up. Lots marked not shippable must be picked up.

Are there fees on top of my bid?

Yes. There’s an 18% buyer’s premium on every winning bid, plus Virginia sales tax unless you have a resale certificate on file. Wire transfer fees are the buyer’s. Check each catalog’s terms before you bid.

How do I sell or consign with B&H?

Call (434) 836-4636, email help@bandhauction.com, or use the contact form. Tell us about your items, collection or estate, and we’ll talk through the next step.

Will you buy my things outright?

Ask. For years B&H’s website has said it buys “one item or your entire shop/household.” Call (434) 836-4636 to talk about whether a purchase or an auction makes more sense.

Does selling cost the family anything up front?

In Cindy’s words: “There are no fees to the estate owner. Everything is covered within the commission of the sale.” The commission is agreed on before the auction.

Do you sell houses and cars?

Sometimes. Along with household goods and antiques, B&H handles the occasional automobile, real estate and business liquidation, including absolute home auctions in Danville.

Is the Market the same as the auction?

Same family, two different ways to shop. The auction sells online through HiBid. B&H Market on the Dan, at 100 Commerce Street, is a store you can walk into. Call the Market at (434) 549-5980.
